Late Goodbye

She ran so fast that she almost knocked down the janitor’s cart. “I’m very very sorry” she quickly helped the janitor to pick up the cart and continued running without looking back. The janitor shook his head and just smiled “I understand.” She pressed the lift button again and again and started to get annoyed by the fact that the lift had to stop several levels before reaching the ground floor. “Damn!” She cursed a little, and when the door opened she jumped in and pressed the floor where it said “Intensive Care Unit”. She pressed the “Close Door” sign until she reached the floor. When she reached, she ran to the wing where he was at, she ran so fast that she thought she had forgotten to breath. Then she saw his parents in front of the room. His mother crying loudly while his father consoled with tears rolling down his eyes, several relatives were there but she couldn’t really make out what they were saying and doing. Her eyes blurred and her heart chanted, “Please don’t go, please don’t go” over and over again.

It was still snowing in January and she had decided not to go home because she wanted to try spending Christmas in a foreign land. She was sitting near the window to capture the beauty of winter from her window when her roommate passed her the envelope. It was from him. Inside there’s only one photograph. A beautiful view of the blue sky, the white sands and the endless crystal blue water, he had drawn in a heart on the corner of the photograph and wrote on it “Flip and read”. She smiled and realized that even though they were far apart, he still managed to control her. She flipped the photograph and saw his handwriting. “Dear, I missed you during Christmas. But anyway, your mom got me a new hoodie. Remember the trip that I told you about. I found this beautiful place and I knew that you are the only person that I wanted to share it with. It might not look too wow in a piece of paper, so why don’t we go there during your next school break?” He then drew an arrow pointing to the very bottom “It’s a promise. We will go next summer :) Stay warm, love“She laughed silently and as if answering to his words, she nodded her head and said softly “It’s a promise”. She looked out to the window, the wind was blowing the leafless tree and the grey skyline that accompanied her all winter long never felt so lovely.

She has just turned in her final paper when her cell phone vibrated. It was her mom. She picked up her phone in front of the class and half whispered, “Hi Mom, yeah I just turned in. By the way I bought the ticket back it’s the day after tomorrow. No, I haven’t told him. I wanted to give him a surprise. I told him last week that I can only be back by the end of the month. What, why? Mom, you are scaring me. What do you mean he wasn’t well? But he is well now right Mom? What hospital? What happened actually?” She felt her feet lost her balance and the next thing she knew she was on the plane on her way home.

The funeral was simple. But so many people had attended. She hadn’t cried since he left and no matter how sad she was, no tears seemed to fall down. His parents asked her to sit beside them during the funeral and his mothers held her hands and as the procession ensued her grip kept getting stronger. She realized that’s how his mother tried to stop her tears. She kept on looking at his picture. He was smiling and she was angry at him, how could he smile when he had chose to left her alone. She remembered when he had to join a camp one summer when they were in high school. She hated him for leaving her alone and decided not to write him any letter for whole summer. He sent her postcards every week, telling her how much he had learned from the camp and how fun it was and how he had missed having her with him. “Dear, I wished you were here. I wished you were here to share my laughs and were here to see me punched that stupid Billy Crocker in his face. I missed your stupid naggings. I miss you. Just you.” She sent her a letter the following day and she promised never to ignore him anymore because of how empty it would make her life be.
Her eyes blinked when she realized that her mother was helping her to stand. The funeral had finished and they were getting ready to go home. She looked at his grave one more time. The emptiness that she felt during that summer came back. She opened her mouth, screaming his name but no sound came out. She fainted.

She waited patiently for the train to come to a full stop before boarding. She picked the window seat near the very back of the train. An old couple saw her and smiled; she smiled back and lowered her eyes to avoid any conversation with them. She pulled out her I-pod and put on her earphones. She picked his favorite song and pressed play. She felt the wind blew on her face and she closed her eyes. Slowly as the song started, memories about him came rushing back. The time when they first met in elementary school, the time when she was lost in the mall and he had found her, the time when she was jealous when he talked to another girl, which made them realized that they wanted to be more than just best friends, the time when he let her go to her dream university. Their late night calls, their letters, their secret codes, their promises.
The train jerked to a stop and that woke her up. She looked out from her window and realized that she had arrived. She alighted and started to walk following the directions that she had in her hands. After walking for almost 20 minutes, she saw the sign pointing to the beach, her heart was thumping faster. She exhaled and said to herself “You can do this.” She pulled out the last photograph that he had sent her back in January. She walked for some more distance and stopped when she realized that she was standing on the exact same spot where he took the picture. She observed her surrounding, and matched them with the picture in her hand. Then she pulled a glass bottle from her bag. On the bottle she had written, “Dear, You. Always, Me” She had written everything that she had wanted to say to him in there. “I made it. I am here. I love you. I will miss you forever.” She took a deep breath and with a swing she threw the bottle into the water. She saw as the water slowly pushed the floating bottle farther and farther away from her. For the first time since he was gone, tears rolled down her cheeks.
